Cabbies will battle it out this weekend for the prestigious title of Taxi Driver of the Year 2008.

Almost 70 drivers will take part in time trials over a slalom course in Madeira Drive, Brighton, on Sunday, March 30.

The event, which raises thousands of pounds each year for The Argus Appeal, starts at 10am.

Tony King, of sponsors Westminster Taxi Insurance, said: "Hopefully we'll be able to raise as much money as possible for The Argus Appeal."

First prize is £1,500 and second is £1,000.

For more information about the event and how to enter if you are a taxi driver, please email info@brighton-taxievents.co.uk.

slalom course well that says a lot..why dont they hold it from palmeira sq to churchill sq.and the winner is the one who can go the fastest almost kill the most pedestrians peep the most and shout the most profanities to any one who dares get in there way.maybe extra points for using the pavement at waitrose or mcdonalds and making the most poeple jump.

Will this be the same farce as last year where about 1% of Brighton -hove cabbies enter it because they dont want to lose money?
