Teens tee off
 |
| Johnny Robinson's website aims to encourage junior golfers |
From hoodies to
happy-slapping, we
have seen plenty of
teenage crazes
recently - but golf?
The pastime,
renowned for its exclusivity,
will surely not
become the latest youth
craze, or will it?
Teenager Johnny
Robinson from Birdham,
near Chichester, has created
a website for junior golfers,
encouraging them to take their first
swing.
The 15-year-old said: "Many people
think golf is for old men or kids
with loads of money but it's most
definitely not. More and more
young people are getting into the
sport and I want to help others see
golf is a sport for all kinds of people,
from all kinds of backgrounds.
"It's true it can be very expensive,
but there are ways around that.
There are public courses people can
use to practise on, and junior memberships
are often subsidised."
Johnny set up the site to help
other junior golfers find information
about the sport, as well as discuss
their passion online.
"Golf should be a sport that is
available to all young people. I will
be doing what I can to help other
young golfers progress.
"I found it very difficult to find
out about things when I started to
play so I decided I wanted to make it
easier for young people to find out
about golf and I thought the best
way to do this was to start a website
just for juniors."
The site, themagicofgolf.com, features
discussion forums, as well as
tips, photos and videos and listings
of all the local and national junior
tournaments.

I am sure my son will visit Johnny Robinson's website. It is a great idea. My son is just 11 years old and only been playing a year but really enjoys it. Its 4 hours walking exercise in the fresh air and I am impressed by the emphasis on etiquette- in contrast to his football matches where there can be swearing and fouling.
My son was lucky to get into golf through his dad who plays and who got him membership (junior membership costs not too bad and equipment is available at discount shops eg soccer world). I would like golf to be an option for more kids to have a go, especially teens. I think last year the Council's Active For Life took some kids golfing. It could be included in summer activity programmes.
