A Sussex businessman is celebrating after receiving a cheque for £1.4m which he won on a gambling website.

The lucky player, who wishes to be known only as Jason H, won the windfall after his lucky number, 23, came up trumps for him while playing roulette.

Bookmaker William Hill has presented the 40-year-old with a cheque for £1,426,000, the third they have given out totalling more than £1m in the past five months.

William Hill spokesman David Hood said: "We must be the world's luckiest betting company... for punters. For Jason H, it wasn't a case of third time lucky, but 23rd time lucky as the number 23 came up several times in short succession.

"The client, because he was on such a hot streak, kept increasing his stakes with his winnings until he hit that magical £1.4m win.

"Since Christmas, we have written three £1m-plus cheques out to winning customers."

Mr H's win comes just weeks after Yorkshireman Fred Craggs won £1m after placing a 50p bet, and another internet casino player, known only as Mr X, landed £1m on a slot machine game in December.

It is great that these people have done so well, but I think the article should be a bit more balanced -- even with these payouts, I am sure other punters have lost much, much more than this...

Completely agree Paul. I feel sickened that the Argus is giving the internet gambling industry free advertizing here, especially when this habit results in so much misery and hardship for so many more than it helps.
Shame on you Argus!

Hi, I think it's great to celebrate other peoples good luck. There's plenty of miserable news in the press these days. The majority of people enjoy betting activites as they should be enjoyed, and all major bookmakers now contribue to research and assistance to those with addictions.

I am assuming that the guys above happily have a pint or cigarette without thinking of the money they are contributing to companies that also assist with 'misery and hardship'?????

In other news:

Man smokes joint, does a few lines and has an awesome time. Feels fine the next day and carries on with life.

OK. I think you, me and Paul need to meet up over a beer, a cigarette and a card game to thrash this out. We can leave Wheeze out of it.
