Nine years ago former Jehovah's Witness Rachel Underhill was forced to refuse a lifesaving blood transfusion while giving birth to her twins. Rachel and her daughters Kira and Zoe survived to tell the tale - and left the faith a few years later. Now she is calling for a change in the law to allow doctors to perform blood transfusions, even against the wishes of the patient or their family. Simon Barrett reports.

When Rachel Underhill saw media reports about yet another Jehovah's Witness who lay dying in hospital, the bitter memories came flooding back.

John Edwards, 58, from London, needs a blood transfusion after a hit and run accident last week but his wife Sheila insists he would not want the life-saving procedure, which is against their religious beliefs.

As a result the couple's sons, who are not Jehovah's Witnesses, could have to watch their father die.

It was an all too familiar situation for Rachel Underhill who walked away from the faith after 30 years.

The 33-year-old company director now dedicates her spare time to helping former members of the religion and has set up a website to provide support to former Witnesses.

Seven years ago Rachel's case made headlines in The Argus when she rejected a blood transfusion during a Caesarean section.

Rachel, of Telscombe Cliffs, later revealed the decision was taken out of her hands by the Jehovah's Witness hospital liaison committee.

She now believes the law should be changed to stop the loss of more lives.

Rachel said: "I saw the story of John Edwards on the front page and it made me so angry.

"It's the same old story. Jehovah's Witnesses claim this is a rarity but it happens a lot more than people think.

"Jehovah's Witnesses need protecting from their religion and from themselves on this issue.

"I believe the law should be changed so hospitals automatically have the power to give Jehovah's Witnesses blood against their wishes."

Rachel's parents had been converted at the doorstep when she was three.

She went on to marry David, a fellow member, but doubts had begun to set in.

In 2004, Rachel eventually faked having an affair with an old friend, knowing she would be driven out of the religion.

She said: "Since that time people I have known for years just ignore me in the street. I was disowned by my family and friends but I am still so much happier now. I want to help others who are in my situation.

"Simply saying we can't change the law as we all have a right to choose our own medical treatment fails to take adequate consideration of the reasons why Jehovah's Witnesses refuse blood.

"Theirs is not a truly free choice but one made under enormous pressure from church elders and the wider Witness community.

"Members know they will be shunned by all their Witness friends and family if they accept a transfusion. The Hospital Liaison Committee members - the Witnesses who liaise with medics when cases such as this arise - will be at their bedside reminding them of the prospect of eternal damnation should they fail to comply with their particular interpretation of the Bible.

"Because patients will have had these ideas so drummed into them, often since childhood, you have to ask whether or not they - or their next of kin - are actually of sound enough mind to make the decision to refuse a transfusion."

Jehovah's Witnesses believe the Bible forbids them from accepting blood, either in food or for medical reasons. There are about 125,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in Britain and more than six million worldwide, including tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams and musicians Prince and Hank Marvin. Followers accept medical and surgical treatment but believe blood transfusion is forbidden by the Bible.

Rachel, who will marry Gerry D'Ambrosio in Lewes next year, added: "The Jehovah's Witnesses are completely out of touch with every other Christian denomination on this matter and simply refuse to accept they might be wrong.

"Worse still, they seem to treat as martyrs those who die refusing transfusions. The whole policy itself and the thinking and teaching around it is, quite simply, sick.

"The Jehovah's Witnesses have changed their policy on other matters in the past such as when they started to allow transplants due to the numbers needed.

"I beg them to change this one to prevent further loss of life."

In recent years, several Jehovah's Witnesses in the UK have died refusing a blood transfusion.

Beverley Matthews, 33, died in 2000, 22-year-old Jonathan Everett died in 2001, Angela Shipperley, 36, died in 2003 and 22-year-old Emma Gough died in November last year after losing blood giving birth to twins.

Courts have respected the wishes of adult Witnesses to refuse transfusions but doctors can attempt to have medical responsibility transferred from parents if they refuse treatment for their children.

Rachel's website, set up to support former Witnesses, has more than 100 members.

Please investigate Jehovah's Witnesses before you dedicate yourself to this mind-control cult. JWs condemn independent research after one joins. Their governing body leaders have made doctrine against vaccinations ('30s-'40s), organ transplants ('67-'80)and all blood fractions, coming from liters of blood, ('61,accepting most blood fractions by 2000)and later okayed these with no apology to their people who suffered and died previously. The Watchtower organization controls their people with disfellowshipping/sh
unning if their people make any disagreement. Would most JWs accept blood transfusions if their leadership finally saw "new light" - most likely.

Rachel made her choice. Leave the Witnesses alone. They have a right to Worship their God as they see fit. There are too many "do-goodies" out there who want to change the Witnesses, especially those who have left the Faith and perhaps have deviated from true Bible principles. OK fine! Do your thing but leave those who feel they are adhering to God's law regarding blood, alone. Too many hypocrites out there judging things they ought not to be judging.

Underhill is becoming a bore. Perhaps the Argus can research how many deaths there when patients have decided to have blood, or have caught other things from having blood transfusions. I have friends who are and are not JW's who have stood firm against having blood. It's not just JW's who refuse blood. Anyway, there are alternatives that can be given instead. The Argus can research into that too.

Rachel is a HEROINE

Simple fact-The Bible does not prohibit Blood transfusions. If you are bleeding to death it is more dangerous to refuse a blood transfusions than to take one.
Bloodless surgeries are great if they can be elective.1/3rd of all trauma deaths are from blood loss. Jehovah's Witnesses elders will investigate and disfellowship any Jehovah Witness who takes a blood transfusion,to say the issue is a 'personal conscience matter' is subterfuge to keep the Watchtower out of lawsuits..

Jehovah's Witnesses children die every year worldwide due to blood transfusion ban.

Rank & file Jehovah's Witness are indoctrinated to be scared to death of blood.

FYI1) JW's DO USE many parts aka 'fractions' aka components of blood,so if it's 'sacred' to God why the hypocritical contradiction flip-flop?

2) They USE blood collections that are donated by Red Cross and others but don't donate back, more hypocrisy.

3) The Watchtower promotes and praises bloodless elective surgeries, this is a great advancement indeed.BUT it's no good to me if I am bleeding to death from a car crash and lose much of my blood volume and need EMERGENCY blood transfusion.

Remember the Jehovah's Witnesses use thousands and thousands of pints of blood donated by others. They use 60% of the blood volume as broken down "fractions" then go on Bible thumping rants about how dangerous and sinful blood transfusions are.

They are such hypocrites!

WATCHTOWER HEMOPHILIAC HYPOCRISY

Jehovah's Witnesses
may take certain components of blood, such as hemophiliac preparations (Factor VIII and Factor IX),and have for many years. The greatest risk of AIDS infection comes from this procedure which is allowed by the Watchtower society,so this proves that this whole entire blood ban thing is totally made up and man made and NOT from the Bible.

Apparently she was not a JW as if she believed she would not have taken the blood.
But as a person she has a free will do as she likes she did not need to fake (lie) about anything to be “driven out” all she had to do is leave. There are no locks on the doors to the Kingdom Hall to get in or out. Just like Adam and Eve they had a decision to make
Jehovah did not make them eat or not eat from the tree. So you make your decision you live with it and I will make mine.

Just like a cult in every way.....

More have died from their Watchtower spiritual and medical quackery than Jim Jones and David Koresh cults combined!

Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs:

A) They are at your door to recruit you for enslavement to their watchtower corporation, they will say that "we are just here to share a message from the Bible" this is deception right off.

B) Their 'message' is a false Gospel that Jesus had his second coming in 1914 .The problem with this is it's not just a cute fairy tale,Jesus warned of the false prophets who would claim "..look he is here in the wilderness,or see here he is at the temple..."

C) Their anti-blood transfusion ban has killed hundreds if not thousands

D) once they recruit you they will "love bomb" you in cult fashion to also recruit your family & friends or cut them off. There are many more dangers,Jehovah's Witnesses got a bad rap for good and valid reasons.

99% of the world has rejected the teachings of the Watchtower Jehovah’s Witnesses, the darker truth is they are a destructive and oppressive organization.

Mind control is a terrible thing.

Blood is by no means safe. Far more die FROM transfusions than from refusing them. They do no publish the statistics regarding those who die from complications caused directly or indirectly from blood but there are many. Many diseases are transferred through transfusion, such as HIV and hepatitus. It is so risky to handle, all professionals (police, EMTs, nurses, etc.) wear gloves before touching it. Recovery time is always much slower compared to those who use blood substitutes. Many new plasma expanders and non blood products have been produced that eliminate the need for blood. Medicine is moving away from transfusing blood to non blood alternatives and before too long will most likely eliminate its use as a medical procedure altogether. For those considering using it, it should be the absolute last resort. It is no magical healer. It is the ultimate bodily fluid exchange between strangers.

As far as a Bible issue, Acts 15:29 says to abstain from blood and puts it use on a par with fornication. These are serious matters for those who try to live according to the council found in the Bible. If one believes the Bible to be the word of God, and it says not to, how can one justify disobeying God? The Bible also promises a resurrection to those who remain faithful. To take blood puts the individual's will ahead of God's. If someone says to commit rape or fornication or they will shoot you, would you? If your doctor says you must not drink alcohol or you will die, will you stop drinking, but inject it directly into your veins and not expect it to have the same deadly effects?

Death was never the intended lot for humans, only by disobedience did Adam and Eve bring sin and death to their offspring. Only by the precious blood of Jesus Christ will the world be restored to its intended state, with death being no more (Rev21:3,4)
Our hearts and prayers go out to John and Sheila Edwards in their time of need. And they are assured that Jehovah is with them and will bless their faith and integrity with everlasting life. As John 3:16 says, "For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, in order that everyone EXERCISING FAITH in him might not be destroyed but have EVERLASTING LIFE." Exercising faith means obeying God's commandments. 1 John 5:3 says: "For this is what the love of God means, that we observe (obey) his commandments..."

As for Ms. Underhill, 2 Peter 2:20-22 applies. She would better use her time in the cause of trying to combat drunk driving than try to legislate away the choice of conscience.

van on, you are completely missing the point. Everyone agrees blood transfusion can cause problems sometimes, but Rachael is talking about a last resort, i e if their is no other option.
Why is it the witnesses will accept some blood parts to save their lives but when it comes to donating to help others they will not do it. As has been stated the witnesses have a very, very bad record of getting things wrong, either medically or as regards their interpetration of bible prophesy. Why would anybody trust an organisation with such a bad record.

Well done Rachel. This evil group needs exposing. If John Edwards has a transusion he will be cut off from all his JW family and friends-no contact not even a 'hallo', he will be viewed as though dead. His whole life for 0ver 40 years will be gone. The only way to get it back will be displaying "repentance" over his actions and being prepared to go to all 5 meetings a week and sit at the back of the hall and have NOBODY talk to him. This could go on for months- until such time as the elders decide he was really sorry for taking the blood that saved his life. Many though would still view him as a weak JW and he would nerver get back his previous standing. So he has the choice of a living death as a JW or dying for his beliefs and hoping the JW version of god remembers him. The ones I feel sorry for in this particular case are the 2 sons who seem to have left the religion.

Hello Rachel,

well done and well written article.

I would like to add :
Some Jehovah's Witnesses believe that a blood transfusion is a liquid tissue or organ transplant, not a meal, and hence does not violate the biblical admonition to "abstain from blood." The Watchtower Society attempts to deny these members, many of them born to JW parents, a free choice in their medical care by means of controls and sanctions - namely enforced shunning by JW family members and friends. They have been persecuted for their conscientious beliefs by their own religious organization which presents itself as a champion of human rights. Furthermore, the change in policy
(april 2000 letter to the Body of Elders )i.e. considering someone who takes a
blood trasfusion and
does not repent ' as someone who has dissociated himself
herself from the organization. Thereforehe/she will be shunned etc. etc like any other "disfellowshipped"JW
. The content of the Society's letter has never been shared with the congregations. Typical from a cult!

Rachel Underhill was not forced to do anything. Abstaining from blood is a personal choice between her and God. Jehovah's Witnesses abstain from blood because of bible principles and a direct command. Being one of Jehovah's Witnesses is a choice. Each individual chooses if they want to follow the scriptural; counsel in the bible or not. You are not forced to do anything. But like those in the bible, if an individual disobeyed the scriptures and was unrepentant, they were to be avoided. The reason for this is very clear. It is to keep the congregation from polluted thinking. Again, being a JW is a personal choice. If you don't like the rules, don't be part of the congregation. Being raised catholic, there is a clear distinction that can not be denied. Jehovah's Witnesses really try to obey God Jehovah and know that since he is our creator, he knows what is best for us. The bible clearly reminds us that man can not even direct his own step. Sometimes you don’t have to understand why; just that it is the right thing to do. God has far more wisdom than any man will and he should be the one to follow.

JW'S are not a cult. A cult follows a human being as a leader, JW'S follow Christ.

I know many nurses who say that they would never have blood and would opt for alternatives which are wide and various. Blood issues in hospitals are not a big deal these days as the NHS are getting more and more requests from JW's and non JW'S for bloodless treatments/surgery.

This woman has decided to leave the faith, which is of her own making. Nobody forced her to become a JW. But many others are.

Why condem someone because they die for their faith? That's that a faith is all about isn't it? When it comes to the crunch.

If a solider dies for his Country he's a hero. If someone dies for their personal faith and involves nobody else, they are viewd as strange/dangerous or downright wrong??

Don't condem on hearsay. Next time one calls on your door, talk to them.
I think you'll be pleasenly surprised by what they have to say about their faith and the blood issue.
NOBODY is brainwashed into becoming a JW anymore than anyone is brain washed to be a Roman Catholic.

Please, gets the facts right and tell this sad, bitter, twisted woman to leave the JW's alone and get along with her own sad, life.

I'm surprised in the Argos for letting someone give a story with so many wrong issues. Its only her say so, not the full truth.

Fact: When receiving an IV, blood leaves the body & enters into a chamber above the needle and is unable to return to the body without depression of the syringe. Under current Watchtower standards this constitutes a blood transfusion. Yet IVs are not banned nor are Witnesses informed of this 'spiritual contamination' by the Organization. The question along with the Bulgarian Agreement is WHY ? ....because even the WTS knows this doctrine is bogus but is waiting for the 'magic number' to come up when all JWs alive have been baptized on or after June 1985. This change to the baptism entitles the WTS to argue voluntary membership in the face of future lawsuits. It also contridicts previous WT publications condeming baptism into an organization, WT July 1, 1955 page 411 para. 15.

How can we say a blood transfusion would have saved anyone? So would GOOD doctors. It seems to me God would have the power to bring people back from the dead if they please Him. To deny this is showing how un-Christian they really are. Druids loved spilling blood all over the place. Instead of calling themselves Christians maybe another name is more appropriate.

The fact is no one can say for sure whether taking or not taking blood would cause death or survival. We can say there are many dangers in taking blood. In the US, we know this and more hospitals are listening to people who do not want blood. There are only a million JWs in the US. To have this effect many more than these do not want any blood transfusions recognizing them as a danger.

I see these people foaming at the mouth to jump on JWs for anything they can make up if necessary. This woman lied to divorce her husband. She lied to leave JWs. While I have heard of people strong armed into a wedding, I have never heard of this in joining JWs or attending meetings.

I was brought up RC and saw very much hypocrisy amongst members. I chose of my own free will to become a Jehovahs Witness, and saw very quickly the truth of the bible and the teachings once I saw the scriptures on abstaining from blood . I quickly came to my own decision that that would include not taking blood transfusions.I was tested on that myself by having emergency op with my first child. and refused blood even under much pressure from some medical staff. I healed quickly and was fine. None of my family were witnesses or husband, but he stood by my right to refuse blood, which I really appreciated and his support. He became a witness 6 years after me.He said he said he could see it was right but didnt want to make a dicision. No one is forced to be a witness we dont baptise our children and always emphasize the seriousness of Baptism not to be taken lightly. Yes there are standards that we keep to keep the Christian Congregation clean . whereas you can practically do as you please in most religions, and you can see by the divisions etc the result. Many will critizise about us keeping Gods Law on Blood yet think nothing of having an abortion, or even spilling blood in warfare. That is one of the greatest things that attracted me. Jesus stated in John 13:35 " By this all will know you are my deciples if you have love among yourselves"
Yes I have been a witness now for over 37 years and have been to many countries and have seen that love in action. We are not perfect yet are trying to show that love to our Brothers and neighbours.and I am gratful someone took the trouble to show that love to me. I am not gullible and not easily taken in by things but will examin e closely. it is not what we do but the motive for doing it. and many too who have been disfelowshiped do not kick back and realize its thier actions.Do what they want yes but not as representing Jehovahs name My own son was disfellowshipped and was away some years he never critizised it and said "He made his bed and must Lie on it" He said he knew the consequenses of his actions nothing is hidden. After 11 years he made his own way back and Happy for it He said he really appreciated that we did not compromise our stand and that helped him to see the seriousness of his own actions. We always Loved him as we are sure your parents do Rachel.and must be saddened very much by your lack of support to what they hold dear.and so gratefull my son never went down that road. He is a very strong minded individual and could of easily done so.Even if we have had bad experiences with others who are witnesses,we realise .that it is what we are doing that is important and not try and justify by accusing others. My Husband is an Elder and loves the brothers and sisters and they love him, He may have to correct some out of love. and that is all it is. Their ultimate life is the most importance as it is fo my family and Myself.

We keep our contact with our daughter mimimal we like to know she is ok, and inform her of any family matters that affect her etc.She has made that easier for us in the fact she is at least respectful. When she first left she had some issues and wanted to justify things, but as she has got older, and seen things as they are. She told us she can see that every she was taught was correct and could not blame anyone else.

We have two Sons and love her no less even though they are witnesses. we did not force her to get baptized and spoke to her at great length about not taking it lightly. A person is not disfellowshipped for what they have done, but for not feeling any repentance for it. The most important thing is to regain our Brother. I myself came out of another religion and really appreciated the high moral code was in place with the witnesses. Not out of hatred are we disciplined.but love. Incidenly it is a very commom occurance, That ones who have left or disfellowshipped and have families are very happy to let the Grandparents teach the children from the Bible,Why, because they do not want to do it, but they know what is right. We never left our Daughter we remain the same. We have not changed. ..Do you know a cult is a follower of a man. We only have one leader Jesus Christ. also there are many hospitals who are doing more and more bloodless surgery especially in USA who are very advanced in many things and much of it because of contact with Jehovahs Witnesses. If you put in 'Bloodless surgery' on the web You will see many instances and how they feel it is safer too. My wife refused a blood transfusion, she was told she could die, but her faith was strong. Its not that we want to die we love life, but we know what and why the law on Blood. TO force anyone to have blood, or indeed any medical treatment against their wishes is an assult against that person. Many in the medical field are excellent in their treatment of us, and much of the Hype we get in the Press is untrue, from experience too.

Surely the Liasion Commitee assumed that Rachel would not want blood if she was a witness,It said she refused a Lifegiving transfusion, yet she survived?? and her twins. Why did she need to have faked an affair? and lie. She could have left the witnesses, Stopped going,They would not have forced her back. was it that she did not want her husband ?
If she is much happier now then why does she just get on with her life. She wouldn't be happy if she did see her parents and others as she hates the witnesses so much so what basis would there be for a loving relationship with them anyway?

THis isnt true. Noone is forced to do anything. It is your choice. You need to get the facts straight before printing this.Anyone can trash any religion. People need to get facts. Dont ask a Baptist about a witness. just like you wouldnt ask a Catholic about a Baptist .. they all talk trash about each.
BUT THIS IS A LIE>> NO ONE IS FORCED TO DO That. its their personal choice.

This is probably what makes the Jehovah's witnesses religion so controversial in that they: PROMISE YOU YOUR REWARD IN THE HERE AND NOW.

Like holding out the proverbial carrot to the donkey the watchtower promises it's followers an impending new system paradise coming any minute you won't grow old you won't need to save for old age retirement.

The other religions have the good sense to promise you your reward AFTER YOU DIE and nobody has ever come back from the dead and sued for breach of promise.

When the watchtower is made to be held accountable for their false promises and defaults thay just go and disfellowship (kick out) those who dissent.Religions can get away with this any secular business that did this would get their leaders put in jail for fraud. The Watchtower religion has busted a million followers and there are lots of angry ex members who won't go quietly.

It's FRAUD for GOD

Danny Hazard what ever you believe, you can't believe other religions have got it right! They do not believe the same in the same faith. Even the church leaders disagree with each other eg: gay marriage , divorce, abortions, war etc etc..yet the apostle Paul said we should all speak the same thing 1 cor 1:10 that would be part of a true christian.

Rachel made her choice. Leave the Witnesses alone. They have a right to Worship their God as they see fit. There are too many \"do-goodies\" out there who want to change the Witnesses, especially those who have left the Faith and perhaps have deviated from true Bible principles. OK fine! Do your thing but leave those who feel they are adhering to God\'s law regarding blood, alone. Too many hypocrites out there judging things they ought not to be judging. Richard

Dear Earl of Hampshire UK,

What are you going to do when you realize that you have devoted your life to a terrible organization and that your daughter was right all along?

The cracks in the hall are beginning to show. The JW organization is failing and YOU know it. All of the JW lies are catching up with the organization.

Membership is continuing to decrease. The organization is exerting more control over its members by preventing them from doing stuff like threatening punishment to people in positions of authority if their children go to college.

It will be a happy day when your false religious organization tumbles!

Matt, I have been to a district convention in Cyprus where Greek Cypriots and Turkish met together, Russian. Almanian, And arabic speaking people having assembly in own lanquage.UNITED, they are increasing in Cyprus as anywhere else. The point is you obviously do not want to live up to bible standards.read what the apostle Paul said in 1 corinthians 6:9 that is binding on all who say they are Christian.People have the choice. and the bit about college ? where are you coming from? Show me a faith that is living up to Bible standards, and teaches all the things Jesus taught, but not water down scriptures to suit ourselves.I have travelled alot and seen the unity amongst JW They are not perfect and do not claim to be,but are trying their best to practice true christianity, Even in Jesus day some left Jesus because they did not want to follow his way only their own. and many early ones critizised "The Way" as it was called then.

One technique a bloodless surgery can employ is called "cell salvage" in which blood lost during surgery is siphoned from the body, passed through a filter for cleaning and returned to the body. It can also be used by the physician during surgery to limit blood loss and to avoid the need for transfusion of blood from sources other than the patient. "Bloodless procedures have proven to be safer than blood transfusion because they help eliminate complications resulting from transfusions such as immunosuppression, infection, diseases from emerging pathogens for which our blood supply is not yet tested," said Dr. Ford. "The hospital stay is also shorter for our bloodless
