South Coast Property Development
Sponsoring the Green Building Design award
Set up in 2002, this property development company works almost exclusively in the West Sussex area. SCPD also includes a construction and rental division and is increasingly involved in pushing sustainable design as a key theme in their developments.
SCPD is currently building projects to sustainable code level 3 and 4 (the highest is 6) and it is hoped that Forest Hills, their latest luxury development of 16 apartments in Worthing, will attain carbon neutral status.
This will help to reduce total running costs for each apartment from a typical £1,700 per annum by up to 90%. SCPD is strongly supportive of the need to reduce our impact on the environment. The technologies, designs and government regulations to achieve these aims are still immature, and often conflicting, but exploring these issues early allows us to lead the field.
Hitting high levels of sustainable design is a steep learning curve for the whole industry, and there is a lot that we still have to learn. We are keen to meet like minded people in the area of sustainable building and design.
This was the prime reason that SCPD decided to sponsor the Argus Eco-awards.
It is our hope that apart from publicising our green credentials we may be able to identify new sustainable design talent that will allow us to improve our future developments.
Barefoot Wine
Sponsoring the Green Campaign award
Barefoot wine was launched in the US in 1986. The brand is all about being
‘Barefoot’- living the carefree Californian lifestyle, having fun and not taking anything too seriously. Barefoot is great tasting, easy to drink wine you can enjoy with friends without any of the stuffy traditionalism usually associated with wine.
Barefoot wine first became available in the UK in 2007, exclusively in Brighton and Hove. A team of Barefooters spread the word around the city, through supporting local community and charity events by pouring wine for free. In 2007, more than £10,000 worth of wine was donated to local events for guests to enjoy while they were raising money and awareness of local organisations.
Barefoot wine is available in over 100 outlets across Brighton (including the Barefoot Bar at the NIVEA SUN Yellowave beach sports venue on Madeira
drive) and many more outlets across the rest of the UK.
We are delighted to sponsor The Argus Eco-awards. As committed supporters of the local communities in which Barefoot wine operates, the team is excited about the prospect of recognising pioneering individuals and organisations who share the same values.
EDF Energy
Sponsoring the Green School award
EDF Energy is proud to support the Argus Eco Awards for the first time. As an energy company, we are determined to play a lead role in tackling climate change. On World Environment Day last year we launched ‘Our Climate Commitments’ - a very ambitious set of targets which go far beyond anything the energy industry has seen to date.
Through ‘Our Climate Commitments’ we are coming up with innovative ways to cut our own carbon emissions and we are working hard to help our customers reduce their impact on the environment too.
We were very proud to be announced as the first sustainability partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in July 2007. At the heart of our campaign to make this a truly sustainable Games, we are working with people all over the country to reduce their carbon footprint related to their home energy use.
We are doing this through our 2012 Carbon Challenge training programme, which provides a complete range of ongoing advice, support, products and services to help consumers to save energy and money when they sign up. Find out more at www.savetodaysavetomorrow.com
The Eco Awards reward and recognise those who have shown initiative and innovation in areas which will ultimately affect how green our local community is. Good luck to all the entrants.
Neilson
Sponsoring the Green Business award
Whose responsibility is the environment? Yours? Ours? At Neilson Active Holidays we believe its everyone's.
After all, going on holiday affects the local population, wildlife and ecology - some things we'll all benefit from preserving. We've made a start in ensuring we audit our Neilson-run hotels and yacht operations for their sustainability, against a check list created by Travelife, an independent initiative funded by the European Union. These awards are highlighted throughout our holiday brochures.
At Neilson HQ on Brighton Marina, we endeavour to recycle everything possible including paper, cardboard, cans, plastic bottles, CDs, glass and even coffee grounds. Mobile phones, IT hardware and even old resort uniforms are donated to charity. Sporting equipment, returned from our overseas beach clubs, is donated to local charities, or given directly to the communities in which we operate. Staff are encouraged to lift share and cycle to work, with discounts available on bikes and an interest-free payback scheme. We also pride ourselves on being energy efficient both at our Brighton base and abroad by running awareness days in the offices, and by ensuring we are turning off lights and equipment when not utilised. And what's more, all our brochures are available as paper free downloads from our website. So there's a little bit about what we're doing. You can do your bit by using responsible holiday operators. It's a respect thing.
Churchill Square
Sponsoring the Green Champion award
Churchill Square believes it has a responsibility to its staff, customers, community and retail partners in the way in which they live, work and spend their leisure time. The centre actively uses its position to benefit and enhance community relations and the environment.
Churchill Square is committed to a series of initiatives all designed to lessen its impact on the environment. We have recently introduced a baling system which allows us to bale all stores' waste cardboard into bundles that are collected weekly and recycled into paper and cardboard. This is a sustainable way of treating store waste, which previously would have gone to landfill sites.
In all back of house areas we use PIR lighting designed to come on only when the area is in use, we are also committed to using low wattage lamps and LED where possible. This aims to save 10% of the centre's energy consumption.
We are aiming to reduce water usage by 25% and have installed automatic flushers on toilet cisterns, installing infra-red taps and auto flushers on urinals.
Churchill Square is delighted to be involved in The Argus Eco Awards, we are committed to the local community and are constantly identifying ways to make shopping more environmentally friendly.
Legal and General
Sponsoring the Young Environmentalist award

At Legal and General our environmental responsibilities form a key part of our Corporate Social Responsibility programme and we have taken them very seriously for many years. Recently, we worked with the Carbon Trust to identify the size of and main contributors to our carbon footprint to help to measure the success of our programme.
We are aware that our own employees attach much importance to this issue and of their personal efforts to improve the environment, both in the workplace and in the local community.
We have tried to make our new office buildings at City Park, Hove as eco-friendly as possible. The office is completely motion sensored so the lights switch off when there is nobody in the rooms for a period of time.
The rainwater which falls onto the roof of the buildings is stored in the basement and used as ‘grey water’ for flushing the toilets and the building has been fitted out using sustainable timber. Even the carpet, furniture and IT equipment is selected on its environmental merit.
Reminders to switch off computers and unplug chargers flash up as part of the shut down process. We have recycling points for paper, plastic cups, bottles, cans throughout the buildings and we are now recycling 77 per cent of our waste from City Park.
By supporting and encouraging these genuine initiatives we hope that we can extend our environmental influence beyond our own activities, and make a positive difference to the communities in which we are located.
As a major local employer we are pleased to be supporting the Argus Eco-awards this year, As sponsors of the Young Environmentalist Award we are impressed by the standard of entries and the commitment and understanding shown by the entrants.
