Poets Corner

Poets Corner There may not be a host of golden daffodils in Wordsworth Street or ancient mariners dwelling in Coleridge Street but there is a host of golden opportunities for housebuyers in Poets Corner.

This area of Hove was developed from 1880 onwards and has changed little over the years. Some of the small corner shops and pubs have gone but, like the Hanover area of Brighton, Poets Corner has a strong sense of community which it celebrates in an annual festival.

As a walk down any of its streets will confirm, the area is dotted with small workshops and businesses, which help the locality to thrive.

Poets Corner is bounded by Sackville Road to the east and Alpine Road to the west with Portland Road and the railway line to the south and north. It encompasses several non-poetic names such as Tamworth and Rutland. Aldrington and Hove railway station are both nearby, which makes the area popular with commuters. Aldrington was once the junction station for services up to the Devil’s Dyke (it was called Dyke Junction).

Notable local buildings include the former Hove General Hospital, several churches, schools and a former cinema. The Granada in Portland Road was opened in July 1937 by Dame Anna Neagle, who lived in from Kemp Town. It closed in 1973 and was turned into a bingo hall. St Barnabas Church in Sackville Road was built in 1883 in brick and flint. There are also churches in Montgomery Street and Portland Road and Hove YMCA is based in Marmion Road.

The area has its own park between Stoneham Road and Marmion Road.

Although on the edge of Poets Corner, Portland Road is its natural centre with its shops, cafes, pubs, offices and regular buses.

James Davis, senior negotiator with Key Residential said Poets Corner has always been popular.

"It is close to the shops and the railway stations and has some good schools making it a great place to live and work.

"It has mainly small houses and flats making it very popular with firsttime buyers and young families.".
