HJ Burt have been jointly instructed in the sale of Bylsborough, the major part of an outstanding Grade II Listed country house, set in beautiful gardens and grounds extending overall to approximately 4.5 acres.

In a peaceful rural location a mile from Henfield village, the three reception room, seven bedroom and four bathroom house includes a swimming pool, is approached by private entrance drive and offers extensive family accommodation spread over three floors (plus cellar). It has been sympathetically refurbished to offer character and style with many comforts of modern living.

Rowan Allan, partner of HJ Burt managing the sale, said: “There has been a settlement at or near this site since at least the 13th century and a tithing called Bilsborough is recorded in 1262/3.

“In the 1930s, the house was purchased by Janet Aitken Kidd, daughter of Lord Beaverbrook (aka Max Aitken, founder of The Daily Express). Janet was one of the ‘Bright Young People’ who made up London’s social scene, whose pursuit of fun and the high life was tireless, and there are reputed to have been many star studded ‘society parties’ held at Bylsborough.

“One of her many guests was Antony Bartley, a Spitfire fighter from the Battle of Britain, who stayed on numerous occasions, including to recuperate from injury, with Janet being so well known for her hospitality that he mentioned in his book, ‘Smoke Trails in the Sky,’ that Lord Beaverbrook offered his daughter £1,000 to remove the bar she had installed, but she never did.

“The property, as now offered for sale, forms the core and principal part of the original house and encompasses all its great history.”
