Adult Learning
WHAT IS ADULT
LEARNERS’ WEEK?
Adult Learners’ Week is the UK’s
largest celebration of learning.
By promoting education and training
for adults, and providing access to
information and guidance, Adult
Learner’s Week aims to attract adults
to learning.
Started in 1992, it is a collaborative
venture between education and training
providers, broadcasters and national
and local government.
Coordinated by NIACE, the National
Institute of Adult Continuing Education,
the Week is supported by the
Department for Education and Skills
and the European Social Fund with
additional support from learndirect and
Ofcom.
With its nationwide promotional
campaign and its high profile activities,
Adult Learners’ Week offers
organisations such as yours a
framework within which to promote
what you do.
Adult Learners’ Week is an opportunity
for all organisations that offer any
form of adult learning activity to either
present a special promotional activity,
or to label their existing learning
activities as ‘Adult Learners Week’
activities.
The Adult Learners’ Week Awards
recognise achievement, and act as
motivation to others, showing that
learning does not stop when school
finishes.
Adult Learners’ Week helps to show
people that with determination, all
barriers to learning can be overcome.

INVITATION TO LEARN
Are you dissatisfied with what you
read, hear or see in the media? Do you
feel frustrated that none of your friends
seem interested in discussing matters
which interest you?
Do you sense there’s a whole new
world of understanding out there if only
you could find some like-minded people
to help you get there? If the answer to
these questions is ‘yes’, then Invitation
to Learn (IL) is for you.
IL runs classes, ‘study retreats’,
exhibitions and other events. Last year
IL ran a series of forty weekly classes
on ‘isms’, this year we have been doing
the same on famous speeches, and
next year the theme (starting this
September) will be ‘People and Power’.
The ‘study retreats’ are not so much
meditative as a chance to get away
from it all, at very reasonable prices, to
discuss a chosen subject. Topics so far have been 'Putting our World to Rights', 'Inner and Outer Worlds', 'Free Speech' and 'Rules and How to View Them'.
Participants praise the convivial
atmosphere and sense of freedom at IL
events. IL’s guiding principles are a
belief in thinking and support for those
oppressed by the abuse of power.
Most IL activities take place in Brighton.

SUSSEX LEARNING
NETWORK
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES - OPEN
DOORS TO BETTER JOBS IN SUSSEX
Are you in work but need to get some
qualifications? Are you confused about
what course to choose or where to find
it?
If so, ‘Learning Opportunities in
Sussex’, a new web-based information
service (with information also available
in hard copy), could be just what you
need.
Vocational courses are work-related
or work-based, and studying them will
help your career by developing the skills
that local businesses need.
Many courses are flexible so you can
fit study in around your work. And you
can take them at colleges and
universities around Sussex so you
might be able to study closer to home
or work than you think.
Everybody can learn, higher education
isn’t just for people with A-levels – there
are ways to get back into learning even
if you haven’t got any formal
qualifications.
And it’s not just for young people:
lifelong learning means you can
study long after you’ve left school
and your experience at work may
be all you need for entry to some
courses.
‘Learning Opportunities in Sussex’
will show you that there’s something in
higher education for you.
Whether you want to boost
your existing career, change direction
r build a career from scratch, it
can help you make informed
decisions about what, how and where
to study.
There are all kinds of opportunities
including full- and part-time courses and
a range of short courses. And there’s
information and guidance on how to
progress into and through higher
education.
Take the example of Pete who works
for a charity. When his manager
suggested he get some qualifications
Pete thought: “I’ll never get in!” But his
work experience was enough to get him
a place on a Foundation degree in Community
Practice.
Or Samantha, a secretary with EDF
Energy who took an HND in Engineering
and is now a performance team
leader. “It was definitely worth it,”
she said. “I would never have the
job I’ve got now without the
qualification.”
Whatever your situation, the better
qualified you become the more likely
you are to improve your career
prospects and earning potential.
Don’t forget that learning as an adult
is very different from learning at school.
With the right subject, the right level of
study and some study support,
everybody can learn!

UNIVERSITY OF
CHICHESTER
University of Chichester – small but
perfectly formed.
The University of Chichester is one of
the newest universities in the UK,
having gained university title in 2005
but it can trace its higher education
heritage back to 1840 when Bishop
Otter College was first established as a
training school for schoolmasters.
These original buildings still form the
historic core of the University’s
Chichester campus.
Six miles away, the University’s
second campus in Bognor Regis, is
based around three magnificent
Regency mansion houses.
Both campuses offer students the
desirable combination of relaxed green
surroundings, with beautiful traditional
buildings, alongside modern,
state-of-the-art facilities.
One of the smallest universities in
the country with just over 5,000
students, Chichester offers a close and
supportive environment. Staff care
passionately about teaching and
students are supported in their learning
by a strong sense of community.
The students rate the institution
highly, ranking it 3rd in the top ten of
modern universities and 11th nationally
in the 2007 Sunday Times Student
Satisfaction Survey.
Most of the courses can be studied
on either a full-time or part-time basis.
Mature students are made
particularly welcome at Chichester with
currently around 40% of its students
falling into this category.
