Holiday entitlement

Claire has joined us as our first part time employee; she does between 12 and 17 hours a week depending on circumstances. What is her statutory holiday entitlement? Andy

You are, of course, referring to the increase in holiday entitlement applicable from 1 October 2007.

You will need to calculate the average hours for the year by multiplying the previous 8 weeks average hours worked by 4.4 (4 weeks and 4 days per annum entitlement or 24 days) to get Claire's holiday entitlement for the year. ie. Claire works 16 average hours per week = 16 x 4.4 = 70.4 hours which is Claire's annual entitlement.

Hope this helps and incidentally, you will need to recalculate in April 2008 when the entitlement rises to 28 days per annum so the multiplication will then be 5.3 times the average hours worked in previous 8 weeks!

I believe that this will cause an awful lot of confusion in the workplace but it's good for the workers!
