Rather than adapting the story for stage, this re-creation of the iconic film sticks to the cheesy lines and gyrating moves that everyone knows by heart.

It portrays a teenager’s emotional and sexual awakening on a family holiday at Kellerman’s resort in 1963. Sheltered Baby and dance instructor Johnny fall for each other despite their different backgrounds and objections from her father.

Roseanna Frascona (Baby) has strikingly similar physical resemblance to the film’s star Jennifer Grey and Gareth Bailey (Johnny) is a sensational dancer, but Patrick Swayze’s animal magnetism is hard to replicate.

Strangely for a musical, the leads do not sing. Instead the fantastic score, featuring (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life, Do You Love Me? and Hungry Eyes, is performed with gusto by the chorus and live band.

The dancing, while slick and superbly executed, is dazzling rather than dirty and actually tame by today’s twerking standards. Johnny’s dance partner Penny – played by Claire Rogers – steals the show with unbelievable flexibility.

The projection-dependent staging is extremely effective, seamlessly transforming the space into a lake, bedroom or stage. The production oozed cheese but is too much fun to resist as the audience had the time of their lives.
