Tom Paxton, legendary folk singer, songwriter and long time political and social conscience of America, made his first UK tour 50 years ago.
While this concert was a celebration it also served as a farewell, for at the end of the year he plans to stop touring and settle down to a quieter life.
And in saying thank you and cheerio to his Brighton fans he chose to put together a programme that eschewed political satire and topical songs, opting instead for an evening of looking back. He joked about being nostalgic by saying “It’s all right to look back as long as you don’t stare”.
Many of the numbers reflected his early days in Greenwich Village which led to amusing and emotional anecdotes of starting out at the Gaslight Cafe, I Miss My Friends Tonight and Mayor Of McDougal Street were particularly poignant.
Paxton’s voice is still strong and is full of joyous enthusiasm. Along with old favourites, Bottle Of Wine, Ramblin’ Boy and Last Thing On My Mind there were plenty of newer offerings – Redemption Road was a fitting last song.
Robin Bullock’s accompanying musical/vocal skills added to the evening’s pleasure.
A great and historic night.
