The all-male cast of ten dancers displayed grace, power and musicality in this classical and contemporary ballet production with a postmodern twist.
Directed by former Royal Ballet dancer Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, the show featured two new commissions, The Murmuring by Alexander Whitley and Mesmerics by Christopher Wheeldon.
With a good balance of light and shade, the choreography was immersive and challenging, beautifully celebrating the male form with a real wow factor.
The Murmuring was experimental - exploring group mentality, death and rebirth with an electronic score reminiscent of a heartbeat. The pulsing bass created tension and an exciting crescendo. Mesmerics was a more subtle and exposed lyrical piece that slowly built to a score by Philip Glass. Bodies tumbled and were intertwined in a stunning and occasionally brutal way. Revolving lifts were as seamless as they were effective.
The simple costumes included jeans, shirts and vests. The epic soundtracks provided a dynamic accompaniment and helped the performances soar.
Each dancer had a chance to shine and performed with passion and flair. Lifts and balances showcased astounding strength and discipline and gave the performance an interesting martial arts twist.
A tremendous night of accessible modern dance and high quality entertainment.
