Listening to the impressive Bootleg Beatles at the town end of the pier had a bit of Magical Mystery Tour about it.

Not so much where are we going, but why are we here?

Baby boomers spoilt rotten on the magic musical era of the Beatles might be inclined to take their incredible catalogue of wonderful songs for granted.

The latest incarnation of the Bootlegs gave the curious younger fans in the crowd a pretty good idea of what all the fuss was about. Two delighted small boys even politely invaded the stage.

And everyone got the bonus of hearing live some brilliantly re-created songs that the studio-bound Beatles never sang in concert such as Strawberry Fields and tracks from Abbey Road.

None of the original Bootlegs play in the band now, with Hugo Degenhardt, a steady deadpan Ringo, from 2003 the longest server. The 2014 newcomer Stephen Hill shone as George Harrison with some decent guitar work, Adam Hastings looked a little Lennon-like and sang believably well, while Steve White aped cheeky chappie Paul cheerfully and sang an emotive Let it Be.

No mystery really, then. Just a pleasant, superbly performed and sometimes even moving reminder of enduring genius.
