Brighton Digital Festival bills itself as a celebration of digital culture.

And it was the celebratory nature of Adam Buxton’s Best Of Bug which made it a perfect fit. While so many internet-based shows are based around poking fun it felt like Buxton was bringing out the best it could offer for the audience’s delectation.

Even Buxton’s infamous YouTube comments commentary contained an affection, allowing the posters stupidity to hang them rather than throwing in snide comments.

On both the music videos and ingenious short films, such as the twisted Don’t Hug Me, I’m Scared and the recreated Rube Goldberg Page Turner device, the directors received as high a billing as the musicians providing the soundtrack.

Highlights included the cartoon ultraviolence of Royal Blood’s Out Of The Black by director David Wilson, the beautiful alien landscape of Encyclopedia Pictura’s video for Panda Bear’s Boys Latin and Ewan Jones Morris’s endlessly morphing accompaniment to Dralms’s Crushed Pleats.

But the selection also proved a big budget wasn’t necessary for a memorable short film – such as the ingenious sped-up video for Vampire Weekend’s A-Punk by Hammer And Tongs, and Buxton’s own exclusive of Lianne La Havas’s Grow.

It was a truly inspirational evening – with plenty more to search out on the internet after the show.
