Concorde 2 entered a time warp when the Rezillos played to a busy house in Brighton on Saturday.

The punk band who hit the headlines in the 1970s and 1980s still belt out high energy vocals and driving riffs almost 30 years after their Top Of The Pops appearances.

But instead of gobbing po-going teenagers sporting Doc Martens, battered jeans and safety pins, the audience is now almost exclusively made up of middle aged fans stuck in a nostalgia bubble.

Fay Fife is more matron than rebellious youth but her voice is still strong and catchy and her enthusiasm remains undiminished. It is hard to say whether the designer punk clothes worn by her and Eugene Reynolds were a fashion statement or a protest.

There was not much depth or variety to the performance although Jim Brady offered occasional glimpses of virtuosity on guitar.

The two highlights of the evening were River Deep And Mountain High and the rousing hit Somebody’s Going To Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight.

In so far as it was possible to distinguish the vocals, the lines “Life’s a bitch, Then you die, I don’t know why” say it all.

It’s time to move on.
