There’s a treat in town for children who love silliness such as farting, crazy costumes and ridiculous dancing.

David Walliam’s best-selling kid’s book Gangsta Granny has been adapted into a stage play just perfect for primary school children.

A cartoon-style show, it leans towards panto with lots of over-the-top acting, mugging to the audience and general nuttiness.

The plot follows Ben, who hates being sent to his Granny’s every week by his ballroom dancing neglectful parents.

When he discovers a secret about his cabbage-loving gran, their relationship takes a whole new turn.

Produced by the Birmingham Stage Company who has a strong history of outstanding children’s shows, it is an assured piece of theatre with plenty of scenes just perfect for younger audience members.

Yet while the show is great for the children, it is a little too predictable for an older audience.

The humour relies on silly noises and farts a little too often and a sharper script could have made it more entertaining for the grown-ups.

Still that feels like sour grapes when you leave with kids all around saying how fantastic it was, with one boy saying it was the best thing he’d ever seen and my own child saying it’s a 10/10.
