A packed audience was treated to two hours of solid metal rock at Concorde 2 on Saturday.

Support act Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons ramped up the evening with a rocking, driving set before Ugly Kid Joe got down to business.

Previously guitarist with Motorhead, Campbell got together with three of his sons, Tyla, Todd and Dane and vocalist, Neil Starr to form the new band in 2016 following the death of legendary front man Lemmy. An album and EP followed as well as performances alongside Guns and Roses and Saxon.

By the time Ugly Joe Kid hit the stage, the room was sweltering, and the band wisely performed in shorts – the drummer not bothering with a t- shirt.

The set included Devils Paradise, Milkman’s Son, Goddam Devil and melodic signature song, Cats in the Cradle before the band were joined by Phil Campbell and co to close with a storming version of Motorhead’s Ace of Spades.

Ugly Joe Kid hail from Alto, California and performed together for ten years until 1997 before breaking up and then reforming 19 years later in 2016. The band have a double platinum album and EP to their name as well as a number of hits.

Vocalist and frontman, Whitfield Crane kept up the momentum engaging with the crowd between songs which featured some epic guitar and drum work.

Most of the set was hard edged metal rock with a softer edge – even at its loudest this was not primal thrash. At its hardest, think of Black Sabbath with some added melody – at its more lyrical, think of Dylan with some added drive.

The place was packed with some die-hard fans who came to enjoy and honour in equal measure. Heavy, but not headbanging, loud, but not too raucous. Enjoyable.
