Emmylou Harris sang new life into an old hit in stunning style when she revisited her superb and re-released Wrecking Ball album before an enthralled Dome audience.

Mind you, at least one person was not thrilled at her announcement that she would run through the entire set of songs. In an unprecedented incident a fan stood up and briefly heckled Harris, obviously concerned fans would miss out on her many other superb songs.

Harris brought all her long experience of gigs to bear as she told the heckler, “We do want to do this record” and went on to give a masterclass in hard-edged country singing with emotion and attitude. For good measure she did throw in some other songs during an encore session.

Perhaps it was a mistake for Harris to allow her backing band a 40-minute spot of their own as her so-called “support” act; the opening ten-minute solo piece on pedal steel was sheer annoying indulgence.

However, the band really excelled with Harris. Her embracing voice (never better than on Every Grain of Sand) sounded both vulnerable and powerful as it cut through some magnificently dark and twisting guitar playing from Daniel Lanois and Jim Wilson.
