Marshall Jefferson
Patterns, Marine Parade, Brighton, Saturday, July 2
THE Chicago house legend is joined by Canadian DJ, producer and Freakout Cult label boss Jayda G. Marshall Jefferson was born in Chicago in 1959 and began producing dance tracks electronically in 1985 when he was still working nights at a local post office. Jefferson’s 1986 single for the Trax label, Move Your Body (The House-Music Anthem), the first house song to use piano, was a popular and influential song in the genre, eventually appearing in the computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In 1987, Jefferson produced the seminal Acid Tracks for DJ Pierre’s Phuture outfit. He then moved into an area he thought of as spiritual house (later to be called deep house) and became one of the sub-genre’s best producers. Jefferson took a break from music in 1990 before returning to DJing in 1993. He moved to England and lived in Billericay, Essex, with a five-year residency at Tribal Gathering and Big Love events.
