There was no encore and he was half an hour late but everything Danny Brown did in between meant no one cared.

No one raps like the Detroit star and very few can match his on-stage delivery. As a writer he clearly knows his own voice well. His flow matches up perfectly, meaning none of his punchy and occasionally amusing bars get lost to the mumbling that can so often be the scourge of live hip-hop.

In a sweaty set he reeled off a series of tracks mostly from his acclaimed XXX album, regularly causing mosh pits to erupt below him. For a show heavy on lyrical content, Brown showed great skill and energy in not allowing any drift to take hold. The crowd responded by remaining vociferous and buoyant throughout. Crowd favourite Radio Song was one of many hits that got screamed back at Brown, though it was probably the back-to-back weed anthems Blunt After Blunt and Kush Coma that were the gig’s high point.

An abrupt end left a few scratching their heads and asking why Grown Up, one of 2012’s best tracks, was omitted from the set list. A small gripe, and certainly not enough to spoil a show of high quality and huge entertainment.
