The new Emporium Theatre on London Road has created a showcase of stand-out performances from the recent Brighton Fringe Festival. Best Of The Fest included Stickyback Theatre’s A Puppet Named Desire – awarded The Latest Award for Best New Comedy.

An unconventional sketch show marrying puppets and humans, it explores themes of love, sex, and relationships. A variety of puppets are employed, including a trio of absurd and crude shadow puppetry warnings against the darker side of sex.

Well-performed and entertaining, highlights included the human pillows and Nosferatu – absurd creations.

The comedy was most effective when Stickyback cast the puppets as characters within the sketches rather than in the linking sections featuring “Bloo” which were over-long and lacked the dynamic energy of the rest of the show.

Stickyback Theatre’s A Puppet Named Desire has a fantastic concept and engaging, witty performers. Their inventive use of music and puppetry puts them a cut above the usual sketch shows.
