Girl Band’s eerie stage persona made for a weirdly wonderful night of free music at the Green Door Store.

It’s been a great start to 2014 for the Dublin noisemakers, with new single Lawman receiving rave reviews all round.

Trepidation surrounded the show, creating a deliberately dark atmosphere, perfectly suited to the band’s agitated sound. Vocalist Dara Kiely stood rooted to the spot throughout, negatively affecting parts of the audience, who would have preferred more energy.

The heavy fuzz coating the monotone electric guitar riffs sounded almost siren-like, working well with Kiely’s commentary-style vocals. Guitar and bass were used more as atmospheric tools than musical instruments, with pedals empirically used to drown out rather than enhance playing.

The unforgiving high frequencies reached by guitarist Alan Duggan added a sharp edge, while bassist Daniel Fox created dark slides using the neck of a beer bottle.

The eccentric song structuring and unique rhythm-fighting rubbed off well on the audience. Stuttering ambient build-ups led to satisfying riffs, notably in the closing track, Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage, capturing the intensity of what Girl Band are about.

The experimental style of the four-piece was exciting, leaving many itching for more.
