It’s not often you get to see one of R’n’B’s big hitters in such an intimate venue. When it happens, it’s a rare treat which is not easily forgotten, and Angie Stone’s Easter Monday visit to Concorde 2 didn’t disappoint.

Her smooth and strong vocals soared over chilled-out grooves on hits including No More Rain, Brotha and P***ed Off, with Stone making the most impressive vocal gymnastics seem completely effortless.

With multi-million-selling albums and three Grammy Award nominations under her belt, it would be easy to assume that Stone may bring some diva-esque behaviour to the stage, but her warm and likeable personality shone through as she chatted between songs and offered up moments for her band and two backing singers to take centre stage.

With more than a dash of gospel flavour, the latter summoned up some positively church-like hand-waving by the crowd in Concorde 2’s secular space, with Stone directing one of the singers to go ahead and “Take ’em to church”.

But it was the encore of arguably Stone’s biggest hit – Wish I Didn’t Miss You – that really got the crowd praising Stone in all her glory.

After teasing them with several false starts – “Oh, that’s not the one you want?” – she finally answered their prayers, resurrecting the soul classic with an extended version, working in scatting, Jamaican beats and a taste of Costa Rica to boot.

An R’n’B legend with so much talent on offer – it’s no wonder the crowd left feeling blessed.
