An electrifying rendition of show-stopper Memories by talented Sophia Ragavelas, as the victimized Grazabella, is the stand-out performance in Cats at the Congress Theatre.

There are also dazzling dance routines, culminating with the spectacular Mr Mistoffelees, in which Joseph Poulton’s acrobatic manoeuvres left us gasping.

But some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical numbers are too similar – and forgettable.

However, there is much to admire in Chrissie Cartwright’s recreation of the original direction and choreography by Trevor Nunn and Gillian Lynne. Turning the Congress stage into a junk yard in which cats congregate for the Jellicle Ball is impressive, as are the costumes.

Charlene Ford, who starred in last year’s Eastbourne pantomime Aladdin, makes Bombalurina the most eye-catching member of the cast with her daring outfit and feline dance moves. Clare Rickard, another favourite from Gotta Sing Gotta Dance, and Filippo Strocchi also shine.

Cameron Ball could show more menace as the dreaded Macavity and his battle with Munkustrap (Callum Train) lacks tension. But the whole cast mingle well with the audience.
