‘Fusion’ finds definition in this splendid show. The Chinese troupe has worked with Cirque du Soleil to create A Warrior’s Quest For Harmony, a spectacle worthy of their creative association, and the huge applause awarded by the audience.
Martial arts have always been associated with traditional old China; a revival in the last 20 years or so has seen schools popping up to train the younger generations.
This 21-strong troupe presented the theme of collision of past and present imaginatively, performing wushu (kung fu) with impeccable timing on a set which took full advantage of the technology of our digital age. Sets changed seamlessly as they were effectively projected with huge impact; musical accompaniment did not suffer for being a technical soundtrack.
It was engaging, exciting, varied and surprising, in every way a feast for the senses. Special effects included torrential rain, thunder, a bamboo forest and a firewalk.
Memorable, too, were the costumes - the opening scene featured a master of martial arts in familiar red silk poised on the top of a high column; by contrast the female drummers’ striking white dresses emblazoned with yin and yang symbols, would not be out of place if worn out in Brighton.
