Now in its fourth year – with a new home at Waterhall and a mid-summer date – Brighton dance festival Shakedown seems to be finally finding its feet.

The one-day event treated revellers to more than 20 acts across three stages, in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Downs. And, despite the storms of the day before, there were no mud baths this year.

DJ enigma Jaguar Skills, in his black balaclava, was an early highlight, criss-crossing genres at breakneck speed with his tongue-in-cheek mash-ups. Anyone who can mix the Countdown theme tune with Daniel Bedingfield and still have the crowd in the palm of their hand is a DJ worthy of note.

Legendary dance duo Groove Armada’s DJ slot was something of a slow-burner, while Brighton’s DJ Friction threw himself into an energetic drum and bass set to a small but devoted crowd in the Supercharged arena.

Two-time chart-topper Duke Dumont brought summery 90s house vibes to the main stage with hits Need You (100%) and I Got U, warming up the crowds for the final act.

But the undeniable highlight was headliners Basement Jaxx. Back in Brighton after nearly a decade, the Brixton duo set the stage alight with a rotation of colourful performers (at one point there were 14 people crammed onto the small stage). Together they whipped up a carnival atmosphere through crowd favourites Red Alert and Where’s Your Head At? that left expectations high for forthcoming album Junto – and for next year’s event.
