The Swedish trio Vasen returned to the Ropetackle and drew a rapturous response with their immaculate polskas and waltzes.

This is the 25th year of Vasen and the original members are still there “without counselling”.

Olov Johansson plays the nyckelharpa, an ancient stringed instrument that is bowed and sounds like a violin and aeolian pipes in equal measure. Mikael Marin plays the five-string viola and Roger Tallroth his specially tuned 12-string guitar.

The compositions are mostly written by the group members and yet sound ancient, linking Swedish folk music with modern attitudes, creating on occasions a charming crossover of baroque and prog rock.

A polska is a dance, and the two sets of just under 40 minutes each appeared to acknowledge the music would be appreciated differently when danced to.

Despite polska following polska the entertainment never wavered, the performers taking turns to introduce the pieces both informatively and with humour.

There were exquisite softer passages and one exciting foray into sound toward the very end, giving light and shade to the performance.

After 25 years on the road Vasen know exactly how to wow an audience and proved again that they are maestros of their genre.
