Jon Richardson has made a living out of being miserable.

From his regular captain slot on 8 Out of 10 Cats to guest appearances on the likes of Have I Got News For You, the 31-year-old is known for being single, unhappy and bitter.

So the news he has recently become engaged and is “happier than ever” was of concern ahead of his Eastbourne gig.

But despite his upturn in fortunes, he still managed to find fault in even the most joyous of occasions.

Unlike most comedians on the customary nationwide theatre tour, Richardson managed to make the gig feel like more than “just another night”.

He took the audience through his struggles on mates’ stag dos (leaving early to watch snooker and eat foreign crisps) and the trials of meeting friends’ babies. But the most cringingly hilarious recollections were those reliving the courtship of his fiancé, Hull comedian Lucy Beaumont.

Despite telling the crowd he was “in love” and “happier than ever”, his trademark bitter hatred at the world was the endearing quality that shone through – and resulted in the most laughs.

From her not being able to stack the dishwasher correctly to her inability to push toothpaste from the bottom of the tube, he had the audience in stitches.

While his soon-to-be wife may think differently, comedy fans will be relieved to know he will always be an angry – and amusing - ball of frustration inside.
