A crazy cross between the cult TV show a League of Gentlemen and a spooky Tim Burton film is possibly the best way to describe The Boy Who Kicked Pigs.

A four-person stage show performed by Kill The Beast at The Old Market, it’s aimed at young people over 12 with its strange, gothic tale of a boy who is a thoroughly horrible piece of work.

Adapted from a novel by Tom Baker, the one-time Dr Who, the story follows horrible Robert Caligari (David Cumming) who is thoroughly disgusting to his kid sister Nerys (Natasha Hodgson) and craves to make his mark on the world.

When he kicks a pig which results in a tragic disaster in his boring little Kent town, he is inspired to take up murder by the speaking tin pig money-box called Trevor.

Fast-paced, very silly and extremely dark, the cast take on a series of gruesome and grotesque characters with a wordy and clever script, occasionally delivered at such break-neck speed that some words are lost.

Scenes from a local newspaper office are hilarious and the physicality of the show is cartoon-like and over-the-top funny.

The set and costumes are simple but ingenious bathed in shades of grey adding to the slightly seedy and faintly repulsive atmosphere. The end is suitably disgusting and satisfying for it.
