The audience were in stitches as Paul Zerdin performed his mix of stand-up and ventriloquism with the energy and fast-paced banter of a real life double act.

Characters included cheeky and sarcastic pre-teen Sam, plus precocious Baby and elderly lothario Albert.

The comedian and master ventriloquist has come a long way since winning The Big Big Talent Show in 1996. His performance was technically immaculate.

His lips never moved and there was no talking through gritting teeth. He was able to produce an impressive range of voices and songs only using his throat.

The sharp script paired with slick comic timing received raucous laughter from the audience who, despite receiving a barrage of insults from the puppets, were on Zerdin’s side throughout.

A married couple from the audience were brought on stage and turned into a flesh and blood ventriloquist’s dummy as Zerdin placed moveable mouths over their lower face, much to the amusement of the crowd.

His interaction with the puppets was incredibly natural and entertaining. The finale featured a song by Sam, who moved around freely despite Zerdin being off-stage - an impressive twist. Zerdin’s contemporary act has redefined traditional ventriloquism, making it cool by consistently pushing the boundaries of puppetry.
