John Wilson’s current tour pays tribute to Cole Porter on the 50th anniversary of his death.

As well as being a prolific composer Porter was famed for his clever lyrics - both romantic and witty.

It was inevitable that this concert should depart from previous ones by having a song-driven programme rather than just a musical showcase for the orchestra.

That is not to decry the musical accompaniment, which was, as usual, rich, lush and explosive.

In the exciting overture Wilson managed to weave together nine numbers and later allowed his musicians to take centre stage with ballet scores from The Pirate and Silk Stockings.

His guest vocalists, which he bizarrely failed to name, were Anna Jane Casey, Scarlet Strallen, Matthew Ford and Richard Morrison - all of whom were in top form.

Strallen contrasted the haunting So In Love with the hilarious wordplay of He Never Said He Loved Me. Morrison received one of the evening’s many ovations for Night And Day whilst Ford was similarly rewarded for You’d Be So Easy to Love.

The effervescent Casey proved yet again her star quality, ranging from the sublime I’ve Got You Under My Skin to the blistering Blow Gabriel Blow.
