The successful reggae band, with a career spanning more than 35 years, proved they still have it with a lively mix of their classics hits and new material.

Despite their recent legal troubles, UB40 let the music do the talking and the appreciative audience lapped it up.

Former lead singer, Ali Campbell left the band in 2008 but this year began touring as UB40, along with former members Astro and Mickey Virtue. UB40 have issued writs against them.

Ali’s brother, Duncan, took on the unenviable task of stepping into Ali’s role and, despite sounding a little huskier, was a worthy replacement.

He was backed by the superbly talented band, consisting of Robin Campbell, Earl Falconer, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Norman Hassan, Martin Meredith and Lawrence Parry. The set suffered a lull midway, perhaps due to a lack of familiarity with newer tracks.

Their iconic smooth rhythmic reggae hits Red Red Wine and Kingston Town were met with deafening roars from the crowd, as was the encore – Elvis cover (I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You.

The audience danced non-stop and the atmosphere was suitably laid back.

Tonight proved that whoever wins the legal battle, the music will stand the test of time.
