The 50th anniversary show of The Sensational 60s Experience captured some of the magic of an era that dripped with catchy pop tunes.

Only a sprinkling of the surviving original stars performed, but the songs still sounded great. Hearing the crowd sing “I’m Into Something Good” with Herman’s Hermits was a hint of how the hits endured.

The excellent Dave Berry’s Crying Game was the ultimate sob story, and the American Union Gap’s Young Girl, performed by the versatile Union Gap UK, had a smoulder of danger.

Falsetto singing by their bassist Simon Paul on the Four Seasons hit Sherry was equal to Frank Valli’s original.

Impressive harmonising by The Ivy League included the trio’s terrific take on the Turtles smash Happy Together.

The most powerful rockers, the Swinging Blue Jeans, might have made a better show closer, and they were melodic too, especially on ballads You’re No Good and Don’t Make Me Over.

When the Hermits wrapped up with the daft sing-along I’m Henry The VIII I Am it was a brief reminder that amidst the shoal of great songs some novelty dross slipped through the net. But everyone seemed too busy having a good time to care.
