If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned pantomime, head on down to Emporium for their fun take on the old classic Sleeping Beauty.

With baddies to hiss at, a handsome prince and beautiful princess and some very silly jokes, it’ll keep your kids giggling.

Based in an old converted church in London Road, Emporium aims to become a regional rep theatre producing high quality theatre for local audiences.

The venue is small and a little basic but with they’ve put on a great show with very simple resources and a lot of ingenuity.

The play, written by Doug Devaney who also played grumpy King Thorn, had an adult cast supported by a troupe of younger actors from the Drama Queens stage school.

While the audiences were happy to join in with the hissing and booing as well as a “he’s behind you” moment, the cast were all individually great.

Princess Briar Rose played by Laura Sillett, looked and sounded like a Disney princess and her beau Prince D Vine played by Duncan Drury was dashing and knowing with just the right balance of self-mockery.

Conor Baum held it all together with panache as Bilberry, the Button’s character in the performance.

The biggest laugh of the night went to Peta Taylor who played Queen Ivy and Jenny Rowe who played baddie Bindweed in a completely bonkers song scene called Sisters.
