It takes a brave musician to introduce a concert by apologising for the length of one piece and the technical difficulties of another.

But orchestra and audience had little need of such frankness as neither was apparent.

Musicians of All Saints charmed in their rendition of a lengthy Haydn Adagio and played the little-known Symphony 54 with sweetness and skill while Steve Dummer, soloist in Carl Nielsen Clarinet Concerto, blew his lungs out in magnificent performance.

This major work of enormous contrasts between sublime moments and passionate drama required a virtuoso technique and Steve had one – his interpretation was mobile and daring.

Robert Hanson introduced Amore For String Orchestra, an adaptation of his own String Quartet finale. It was a lyrical and sustained composition which developed into a powerful moodscape of repeated motifs but if the structure felt free-flowing, the harmonies were familiar and unthreatening.

A Vivaldi Concerto began the programme and Haydn provided the conclusion in the third Nordic Season concert for the Musicians of All Saints, a small orchestra with a loyal and growing audience for their challenging new music and unfamiliar classics with a very accessible and personally introduced performance style.

Bravo to all: encore, please.
