The Green Door store was packed on Thursday night, and that was just the stage.

Before The Barr Brothers had even stepped out front there seemed little space left for them among the towering full-sized classical harp, double bass and pedal steel guitar plus the more regular band paraphernalia of amps, various basses and guitars.

But when the band picked their way through and launched into their first number their odd collection of instruments made total sense.

Rooted in a weird mix of classical music and Led Zeppelin, soft rock favourites The War on Drugs were a very obvious touchstone.

But as the night progressed their seemingly disparate elements coalesced into something much more interesting and exciting.

Led by Montreal-based singer and guitarist Brad Barr, at certain moments an impossible but brilliant math-rock-swamp-blues crossover emerged from the woozy, southern-rock Americana, before they slipped effortlessly into a close harmony folk bluegrass combined with an epic Hendrix harp and guitar wig-out for good measure.

Current single Come In The Water sounded great on the radio, but on stage it was a tower of a song. Awesome.
