Ryan Adams’s live performances often depend on the mood the singer-songwriter is in.

Previous Brighton appearances have seen him change setlists on the hoof to avoid playing yelled requests and bawl out photographers from the stage.

But on Thursday night he played a fan’s dream setlist in a packed two hours.

Perhaps it was down to his latest self-titled album – which has seen him return to the classic rock style which dominated early-2000s albums Gold and Rock And Roll.

Surrounded by a set resembling a basement rehearsal space – complete with giant amps, vintage video games and stuffed animals - Adams set the tone from the start with rocking newbie Gimme Something Good, backed by a tight four-piece band.

From there he effortlessly moved backwards and forwards in time – taking in New York, New York, Dirty Rain, Trouble, a gorgeous solo acoustic Winding Wheel and breath-taking set closer I See Monsters.

After Adams played guitar in her opening set, support Natalie Prass returned the favour by taking Emmylou Harris’s part on O My Sweet Carolina - giving a performance which even made Adams pause for a moment.

The audience did test Adams during the evening. Despite the many signs requesting no flash photography smartphones regularly lit up the auditorium.

But one of the audience shout-outs turned into the highlight of the night as Adams improvised a whole new song, Indiana Jones, about the hero archaeologist.
