Coves are keeping their 2014 momentum alive, as their adrenaline-fuelled fizzy pop ignited The Hope And Ruin on Wednesday.

Success of debut album, Soft Friday has seen a rapid rise in popularity. Performing tracks from the album, as well as previewing new material from impending EP, Spectrum, the four-piece put on a sonically dark, well-groomed show.

Guitarist John Ridgard’s chilling strums opened, immediately captivating onlookers. Atmospheric riffs worked with eerie synth backing tracks, building into big, haunting choruses. A megaphone was even produced by vocalist Beck Wood, adding further intensity, particularly effective during Fall Out Of Love’s huge outro.

A makeshift drum kit sat at the front of the stage, used to dramatically dictate the feel of the show. Colourful lighting was also used to full effect during a performance so well chiselled it was easy to forgot you were at the attic venue.

A minor slip up from Wood was laughed off and brilliantly covered up by the group. However, the hate-tinged lyrics and clean, party-like stage presence at points didn’t work together.

It feels as though Coves have been around a long time, and the buzz surrounding them is exciting. If they carry on this way, there’s certainly a bright future ahead.
