Intrigue, disgust, sadness, fear, desperation and finally anger. Lots and lots of anger.

That was the scope of emotions we experienced at Nirbhaya. Anger with so many things - from the society that betrayed these people stood before us, to the people that committed the atrocious acts, to the fact that it took a piece of theatre to point out the obvious: we have had enough of sexist abuse.

On 16 December 2012 a young woman was gang-raped by six men. This piece told that story and the stories of the women performing the piece.

The ensemble, comprised of five women and a single man, told their stories – from one woman being sexually abused by an uncle aged nine, to another being set alight with kerosene by her husband before having her child taken away.

One member of the ensemble that deserves a mention is Sneha Jawale – her story, communicated in her own language, almost needed no translation. The raw emotion in her voice and storytelling portrayed her sadness and the words alone seemed impossible to convey such loss.

Nirbhaya is undoubtedly a life-changing piece of theatre. It is a powerful piece which demands to be watched by all.

Here’s hoping this devastating yet beautiful piece is in national theatres soon.
