This raucous review about dating, men and motherhood was a naughty but nice Mother’s Day treat.

Sarah Dearlove played agony aunt Penny Crowe, a radio show host who discussed dating disasters. Not for the prudish, the calls were based on real stories from real women, including cross-dressing, swingers’ parties and the difficulties of seducing your husband while the football is on.

These scenarios were played out by Dearlove, Claire Sweeney (playing a fictional version of herself) and Rory the producer, played by Carl Patrick.

Co-writer Sweeney shared humorous anecdotes about finding Mr Right and pregnancy, occasionally breaking into song. Performances of I’m Every Woman, Somebody Else’s Guy and I Will Survive had the audience swaying in their seats. It was a great platform to showcase her strong vocals, comic timing and undeniable likeability.

Audience participation was encouraged throughout, including a section called Bad Date where audience members shared unsatisfying dating experiences. This gave the show a relaxed feel, like a night in with the girls.

Hailed as a “British version of Sex and the City,” this seemed more like downing cider on the pier than sipping cosmopolitans in Manhattan.

Nevertheless, the audience lapped up the innuendos with howls of laughter.
