Authentic harmonisations and call and response choruses continue to reverberate around my brain, as the The Magic Gang justified the hype with a vibrant showcase at Bleach, to close a month-long tour.

An overwhelming sense of anticipation surround the local four-piece these days, who have been touted as the next big thing. The group have had virtually no space to breathe so far this year, with their latest record, No Fun, being the subject of a huge amount of hype.

A short, half-hour set consisted mainly of material from the new record. 1960s-pop influenced guitar tones set the foundations for building, fuzzy-pop tunes, with big, shimmering guitar solos sitting on top. Memorable, romance-tinged lyrics were passionately chanted back by the eager crowd, who threw themselves around the attic venue, to the amusement of the band.

Mirroring their audience’s excitement in a spirited show, the preppy four-piece radiated energy, showing no signs of burning out. The members really shone off each other, creating a fun, intimate atmosphere.

The band’s captivating, original sound and enthusiasm was refreshing. If they keep the momentum moving in their favour, the group could well be destined for the top.
