It’s nice to start the Great Escape by taking in something a little outside of your usual tastes to build into the festival. As such Austrian rock act Bulbul seemed to fit the bill.
The Prince Albert’s intimate upstairs venue was packed to bursting as the grizzled looking foursome took the stage. What followed was interesting, if not necessarily great, 40 minutes of electronic-infused rock and plenty of heavy bass.
The crowd, encouraged by Bulbul’s billing as one of the festival promoters’ acts of the day, bought into it and were moved to tear themselves around the venue’s beer-stained floorboards.
The appearance of an umbrella, used instrumentally, was very entertaining and confirmed why kicking off the festival in such a way was a good idea, you never know what you are going to get.
