Immigration is a divisive topic.

So it is refreshing to hear it approached with frankness, warmth and humour in this superb show hosted by Sameena Zehra and Sajeela Kershi.

The two talented comedians have brought together guests from a range of backgrounds for their touring show, which is in Brighton’s Blue Man every weekend in May.

The result is a hilarious, powerful and challenging collection of thoughts and stories, which fits the intimate venue nicely.

Some of the material is quite dark, ranging from experiences of prejudice to a story from Israeli human rights lawyer and comedian Daphna “Miss D” Baram about an incompetent terrorist.

The show is also incredibly moving. Without going through the experience of moving to a new country, it is hard to grasp the emotional upheaval that comes with it.

But stories from the five performers expose the challenges and lasting personal impact of such a move adeptly, and still make it deeply entertaining.

Actress Jing Lusi’s recollections of starting school are particularly moving, though never so dark that the audience can’t laugh along with her.

Funny and poignant, The Immigrant Diaries should be available on prescription to anyone developing a callous attitude towards immigration.
