If you were around in 1978 you might remember the song Lucky Stars, it reached number three in the charts and was Dan Friedman's biggest hit in the UK.

In his homeland of America the story was the same, one hit, but there in 1977 it was Ariel - 'a quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, pot-smoking, vegetarian Jewish girl in a peasant blouse' (deanfriedman.com).

A small crowd gathered in the pews of St Andrews Church to witness what the 60-year-old had to show after a 40-year career as a one-hit wonder.

Friedman was very relaxed, self-assured, and had that special gift of being able to sing with a permanent smile on his face, probably because he was so happy.

I Love My Job and I'm a Lucky Guy, he sang.

Unfortunately the PA was not on his side and it was hard to hear the well-crafted lyrics. His piano playing and acoustic guitar did the job without being virtuostic and it was all pleasant enough with Friedman's well honed links chugging things along nicely.

For a troubadour of such longevity this Jewish boy with a silver beard deserved the respect he was shown.

Three stars
