Barb Jungr took songs you knew and twisted and turned them into a completely new experience. They were not exactly covers because the songs transformed into different offerings while retaining hints of the original.

As a newbie to Jungr, this was fascinating, occasionally frustrating and also challenging to listen to.

Her repertoire covered songs by Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen accompanied by pianist Simon Wallace. Her voice was mesmerising and hard to define. At times crackly and gravelly, then sweet, pure high notes to rich and soulful.

According to Wikipedia, Ms Jungr is a chansonniere and best-known for her interpretations of the work of others although she is a singer/composer in her own right.

What they didn’t tell you was her absolute ease and sense of fun with the audience as she chatted through the set. She was a natural comedian with a rich vein of sarcasm telling us about singing at Leonard Cohen’s birthday in Shoreditch – Cohen didn’t show - and tales about a trip to Canada and blowing all her cash.

Jungr was a complete chameleon changing throughout her set from soulful diva to tortured chanteur, at times reminding me of Kate Bush and the next minute a powerful rock goddess. She’s a force to be reckoned with.
