It’s notoriously difficult to predict an Anton Newcombe show, with the ghost of the Dig! documentary following him wherever he plays.

This time, however, the spotlight was firmly on his collaborator, Tess Parks, and the relatively unknown London based singer-songwriter did not disappoint.

Set out as a five-piece, the band played through recent album, I Declare Nothing in full. Parks’ gruff vocals and gormless coolness radiated a hauntingly distinctively Mazzy Star vibe, perfectly complimenting Newcombe’s chords.

Eerie silence filled the room as the group brought opening track, Wehmut, to a close, prompting Parks to an awkward: “It’s very quiet”. The crowd gained their voice after this, with one lucky fan rewarded for his keenness by being lent Parks’s tambourine to end a song.

Big, droned instrumentals burst out of each track, with the three guitars creating a huge wall of sound. This was particularly effective during Melorist, with really kicked into gear as Newcombe’s vocal line gathered momentum.

Just a brief “yo” was all the crowd could get out of Newcombe, who is clearly intent on showing the talented Parks to the world. A mesmerising, ageless performance proved he’s still got it, and there’s a future star emerging.
