Esther Yoo was fashionably late on stage but well worth waiting for.

She launched into the Chaccone by J.S. Bach, perhaps the greatest movement composed for the solo violin, and the audience was hooked.

At just 21, Yoo is a rising star and was recently named a BBC New Generation Artist, the latest in a series of awards she’s been winning since the age of 12.

Dressed in scarlet, with a quiet confidence, Esther Yoo was an animated performer, flicking her dark ponytail and clearly enjoying every note. Playing a 1704 Stradivarius with a flourish, she was fun to watch and thrilling to hear.

Renowned pianist, Robert Koenig, joined Esther Yoo for the evening and the duo played Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No 8 In G Major which demands virtuoso playing from both musicians.

Debussy’s Violin Sonata In G Minor followed the interval, during which the interplay and silent communication between the two artists was a joy to witness.

The programme, including Glazunov’s Raymonda and Tchaikovsky’s Valse-Scherzo, was a crowd-pleaser yet complex enough to showcase the technical ability of the violinist.

A summer’s evening in the picturesque surroundings of Glynde Place and a world-class but intimate performance by a sparkling young talent.

Utterly delightful.
