Guitarist and singer George Benson is still Breezin’ at 72 and how the crowd at the Dome loved him.
Naturally his super-cool and familiar hit, played mid-concert, was greeted with waves of applause but brilliant Benson had the stalls up and dancing as early as the third number, a rousing Love X Love.
The upstairs crowd soon followed, propelled to their feet by the insistent promptings of favourites such as Lady Love Me (One More Time) and In Your Eyes.
Benson started with some intricate guitar jazz as if to remind the crowd that is where his impressive talent shines, and a gorgeous version of the gentle Norah Jones hit Don’t Know Why and some re-worked Steve Wonder showed his stunning ability on guitar.
His voice grew stronger with every song, and behind him lead guitarist Michael O’Neil and musical director David Garfield showed what fine musicians they are as the band turned in an immaculate performance.
Delighted Benson told the ecstatic crowd: “Wow you guys know how to party”.
He threw some romantic ballads into the party mix and a funky version of the old Drifters hit On Broadway was a fitting encore to a superb concert.
