The classic Nirvana tune Smells Like Teen Spirit played on the ukulele.
It sounds a little far-fetched but have faith. The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain’s performance flipped the entire tone and tempo of such a typically sombre song on its head. And the mock head banging raised a smile too.
This, and a handful of other surprising combinations, from Pharrell Williams, to Quentin Tarantino with Adele, Prince and The Clash in between, saw the packed audience grinning, laughing and clapping all the way through the concert.
The seven-strong group’s set of nearly two hours was a whirlwind of expert plucking and strumming. Songs were performed on the tiniest ‘uke’ you have ever seen - the size of a hand - to a much larger model.
The inspired arrangements of many a well know song broke down every possible musical boundary and tradition.
There was the odd custom ukulele ditty – George Formby’s work of course made an appearance – but always with the group’s own unconventional but intriguing twist.
A mix of timely jokes and comic in-character performances to match the mood of the music impressed both first-time fans and longstanding supporters alike.
