Distinct South American charisma filled The Prince Albert, as Juan Wauters opened his first UK headline tour with a brilliantly lo-fi performance.
The intimate New York-based folk-rocker has set out to conquer the UK, promoting new LP, Who Me?
A large, scruffy banner, containing a scribbled drawing hung behind, as Wauters took to the stage, alone, to open the set.
After a few solo numbers, the Mac DeMarco fans’ favourite introduced his two band members.
Simple guitar progressions laid the fundaments, as Wauters’ catchy vocal melodies charmed the crowd during each sub-three minute track.
Tacky lights flashed along from different points around the stage, whilst the audience sang along to the lyrics; “Like a movie that is good, you require my attention”.
A slight issue with the banner staying in position failed to mar the evening, although the performance as a whole could have done with a bit of spicing up at times.
An endearing show that wouldn’t have felt out of place in a stuffy 1950s bar, was brought to a close after three encores.
Although he may need to add a bit more substance to shows, Juan’s certainly left his mark on these shores. Arriba.
